A ball vape doesn’t behave like a battery convection device. The thermal mass of ~40 heated balls stores enough energy to deliver multiple draws per heat cycle, and the cap stays hot for several minutes after the gauge triggers. You get a usable window of about three to five hits per heat on a 0.1g bowl before you need to reapply heat. The 0.05g setting trims that down proportionally. On a torch, reheats take seconds. On the YLL 3.0, reheats take 25-35 seconds depending on body material.

The stainless steel body runs hotter in hand than the titanium after two or three heat cycles, which users have attributed to steel’s thermal conductivity and the lack of a wood heat shield on standard colorways. The PPS plastic heat shield handles the heat without issue, but it transmits more warmth to the fingers than the wood version does. If you plan to run back-to-back sessions, the titanium body or a wood-shield colorway handles that use case better.

Vapor quality holds up through the session. Flavor is strongest in the first two hits and gets more rounded in the back half of the bowl, which is standard behavior for a ball vape’s heat distribution curve.

Heating Technology and Vapor Quality

Convection through a packed thermal matrix is the Tempest 2 Slim’s core mechanism. Air pulled through the bowl passes over the heated balls, which transfer energy to the airstream, which transfers energy to the material. The result is a draw that tastes closer to a desktop convection vape than to a conduction portable, with lower combustion risk because the material itself isn’t resting against a heat source.

The Slim’s refined ball screen track makes the twist-to-lock engagement cleaner, and the improved bowl locking tab grooves on the stem reduce the odds of a bowl backing itself loose mid-session. Minor refinements, but noticeable in daily handling.

MAD Heaters’ marketing lists “enhanced heat distribution” for the Slim’s full-bowl extractions. The company hasn’t published supporting data on this claim, so treat it as a manufacturer position until independent testing lands.

Usage Tips & Maintenance

Getting the Best Results

Pack the bowl loose rather than tight. Convection draws benefit from airflow through the material, not around a compacted plug. For the 0.05g setting, use the included tool to seat the screen correctly so the chamber volume stays accurate.

On an induction heater, trust the gauge and the clicks over a stopwatch. Ambient temperature affects heat-up time, and the published 39-43 second range assumes room temperature. In colder environments, add a few seconds. For reheats, pull off heat 8-12 seconds earlier than the first cycle, or stop one gauge marking earlier.

If you’re running back-to-back sessions on the stainless steel body, the heat shield area will build up heat over time. Rotate the device in hand or let it cool for 30 seconds between heats.

Cleaning and Care

Disassemble the stem, cap, cooling unit, and ball matrix per the manual. Soak the metal components in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. The balls, screens, and cooling unit can go in the same bath. Rinse with warm water, dry fully, and reassemble.

Avoid extended soaking of the PPS plastic heat shield in high-concentration ISO. Short dips are fine; multi-hour soaks will degrade the plastic over time.

The cap will discolor near the heated induction sleeve with use. This is cosmetic, not functional, and MAD Heaters calls it normal. If the discoloration bothers you, a wire brush and some patience will polish most of it out.
