90 Zirconia Balls Creating Real Convection
The Tempest 2’s heater contains 90 ceramic zirconia balls that create a massive surface area for heat exchange. Air passes through this thermal matrix and gets superheated instantly, hitting your material with pure convection rather than cooking it against hot metal. Users consistently report getting 3-4 solid draws from a single heat cycle, with complete extraction every time – no stirring, no hot spots.
Visual Temperature Gauge Plus Audible Clicks
The visual indicator changes color as the device heats, while the click discs provide audio confirmation when it reaches the desired temperature. The dual feedback system means you know exactly when you’ve hit optimal temperature, whether you’re using a torch or an induction heater. Heat between the ring markings for balanced extraction, closer to the bowl for more conduction, or higher up for pure flavor.
Adjustable Bowl for Different Sessions
The twist-lock screen adjusts to three positions: small (0.1g) for microdosing, medium (0.15g) for personal sessions, or large (0.2g) for sharing or heavy hits. The wider bowl design on the v2 creates more even heating compared to the original Tempest. The screen stays locked in place – no accidental dumps when you’re clearing the bowl.
Materials That Don't Compromise
Grade 5 titanium body means zero metallic taste and incredible durability. The anodized aluminum heat shield stays cool enough to handle even mid-session. The stainless steel induction sleeve works with any IH that fits DynaVaps, though some older Wands might need the opening widened to 14mm. At 46 grams with the aluminum shield, it feels substantial without being heavy.

The v2 has a larger bowl with better heat distribution, a thicker induction sleeve for better heat retention, an improved ball screen that twist-locks, and an easier indicator assembly. It’s a genuine upgrade, not just a minor revision.
Will it work with my existing induction heater?
If it works with DynaVaps, it should work with the Tempest 2. Some older Ispire Wands have openings smaller than 14mm, so be sure to double-check your heater’s diameter.
Can I combust with this?
It’s harder to combust than with a DynaVap thanks to the convection heating, but yes, overheating is possible. Respect the clicks and visual indicator, especially when learning.
What's the best heating method?
Torch gives you more control and ritual. Induction gives you consistency and convenience. Most users start with the torch and add an IH later. Both work excellently.
How long do the balls last?
The zirconia balls should last for years with normal use. They’re user-replaceable if you want to experiment with different materials. Ruby retains more heat, quartz tastes cleaner, and SiC is the middle ground.
Is the case necessary?
Not necessary, but highly recommended. It lets you store the device while hot, protects it in pockets/bags, and includes a useful debowler. For $45, it solves several daily-use problems.
What about the Reload 3?
The Reload 3 is the perfect companion for the Tempest 2. Strong magnet for cooling, built-in debowler, storage compartments, and decapping rails. If you’re getting the Tempest, budget for the Reload too.
Why is there a wait time between bowls?
The thermal mass that gives great extraction also means heat retention. It needs 2-3 minutes to cool enough for the click discs to reset.
Can I use concentrates?
Technically possible with hemp fiber or a degummed hemp pad, but it’s designed for dry herb. The convection heating isn’t ideal for concentrates. Get a dedicated concentrate device instead.

How It Compares to DynaVaps
If you’re coming from DynaVaps, the Tempest 2 feels like the logical evolution. Same ritual, same heating method, but with genuine convection heating and a much larger bowl. Users report their DynaVap collections “collecting dust” after getting the Tempest 2. One bowl in the Tempest equals about two DynaVap bowls, but extracts more completely thanks to the convection heating.
Heating Methods and Timing
With a double or triple-flame torch, aim for 20-30 seconds of heating while rotating. Keep the flame about 1cm from the cap – too close, and you’ll get hot spots. The visual indicator shows your progress, clicking when ready. For darker roasts, heat lower on the cap near the bowl. For pure flavor, heat higher up on the stainless steel section.
With induction heaters like the YLL v3 or Ispire Wand, most users find that 70W for 40 seconds delivers perfect results. The thicker induction sleeve on the v2 provides better heat retention than the original, though this means longer cooldown between bowls if you’re doing back-to-back sessions.
The Heat Retention Challenge
The Tempest 2’s thermal mass is both its strength and weakness. That heat retention means long, satisfying sessions from a single heat-up, but it also means waiting 2-3 minutes for cooldown between bowls. The Reload 3’s magnetic de-bowling cap helps speed up cooling, and the Tempest Case allows you to store it hot; however, rapid back-to-back sessions remain challenging. This is commonly referred to as One Hit Extraction (OHE), not a chain-vaping device.
